There's quite a lot of great posts on how to make more sense of those dreaded (not provided) keywords in your GA reports, but a lot are quite complex in terms of implementation. This one on State of Search today is pretty good, and I'm probably going to be using it soon myself.

But I thought I'd share (as my first post here, so be kind :P) a little filter I use as a quick 'n' dirty modification to make a bit more sense of those not provided keywords whenever I'm setting up a new client's GA account.

What you need to do is set up this custom filter

Basically what this will do is append the landing page to the keyword for all your (not provided) visits. So if you have a nice, well structured site that you've carefully mapped your keywords to (and if you don't, why not!?), you can pretty much work out the keyword set to which those not provided visits belongs, based on the page its landing on. So what you'll see in your reports, in place of (not provided), is "np - /landingpage.html"

It's not a perfect fix, but it is quick and pretty easy to implement, and there are no risks to losing data, so you don't need to set it up in a new profile either, unless you really want to.

Simples. Hope you like it, and get some use out of it.

Nice one Shaun, makes it easy to see at a glance where your (not provided) pain points lie. (And thanks for the flattery re: my State of Search post. :))

Glad you like it Barry. :) And any flattery is wholly deserved!

hi, Shaun,

I had posted this filter here a long time ago, having come up with the idea & gone through the hassle of trialing & erroring to get it to work: http://econsultancy....ack-from-google

I'm always careful to credit people - would have been nice if you'd have done the same here.
