Unfortunately, this one uses filters and is too complicated to be a one-click install to your Google Analytics, but I thought it would be useful to post a link to the how-to.

Bryan Casson over at SEOMoz has all the details and instructions on creating a custom report that shows what position in the Google organic search results your page was when clicked on by a user. Beware, this one is truly for Advanced Google Analytics users!

Awesome, thanks Bryan!

I just wanted to add that while we can add Bryan's Advanced Segments above, we still have to do his Step 1 of creating filters 1 & 2.

Filter 1:

(Extracting the data):

We need to create a set of filters to extract the ranking data from the (cd) parameter and hold it for us in custom field 1.

Posted Image

Filter 2: (Displaying the data):

We will then need a filter to grab the information from custom field 1 and show the results under the "Traffic Sources > Search > Organic" section of your Google Analytics.

Note: Be sure that the filter order is correct, Filter 1 must be above filter 2 in the order.

Again, you probably will want to refer back to the original post on SEOmoz.

I'm going to try to set mine up shortly and will report back.

Thanks Brian for the awesome post
and Jill for this awesome forum.
as there is a lot to learn in Google Analytics for me, i was wondering how did you determined the value you put right beside the "Referral" in Filter 1?

One more thing to add: Please remember that this filter tracks position for Google ONLY and not for Bing, Yahoo or other search engines. (it does not even track Google search partners).

I totally love this method. Glad to see it in this forum. The first place I believe I saw this was from Andre Scholten in 2009. http://yoast.com/tra...e-analytics-ii/ (This link is to Andre's updated method). Bryan, happy to see that you brought this to the Moz community and now it is here. BTW, if someone out there isn't following Andre, you should.

One thing that I want to add to this conversation is that instead of combining the term with the position, I suggest simply passing the position to a user defined variable. That tends to give quite a bit more flexibility to reporting in the UI and it doesn't add as much fragmentation to the keyword reports. Rankings can then be drilled down into or added as a secondary dimension.

Something to keep in mind with these reports is that with Universal Search there can be a lot more than 10 results on the SERPs when looked at through this lens. In other words, this is a different way of modeling rankings than most other traditional SEO reports. Not a bad thing per se, but something to be aware of.

Set in up yesterday and it works like a charm. However lot of my keywords are coming as not provided. Is there someway by which I can get the value of these keywords. I have attached a screenshot below from my analytics account

Use the custom segment here http://www.customrep...d-filtered-out/ to filter them out.

First find the new filter you created under "Account List". Then locate Standard Reporting > Traffic Sources > Search > Organic. Or create the advanced segments as explined in the SEOmoz post and view the date using the segments. Please note: It will take a couple days to show data

Great Thanks! I need a Custom Report that will show me Goals By Keyword (organic only)

eg

Keyword Visits Goal 1 Goal 2 Goal3

Where keyword refers to organic keywords and goal 1,2 and 3 are the Goals I have set-up in Analytics.

The report should show how many goal completions a client got from each organic keyword and the total visits in question.

Anyone who has a custom report for this?

You don't need a custom report for that, the standard ones do that easily. You may want to read some Google Analytics tutorials to get a feel for what it can do.

Very nice post!
One issue, perhaps someone has already reported it (sorry in this case): some of the main keywords of my client include the number 3 (for example: "Omega 3"). The advanced segments created to show the top 5 and top 10 position are therefore imperfect because the ranking for the word "Omega 3" and its MANY derivates would always appear because it includes the number "3". <_<

Any suggestions?
